I think over again my small adventures...

I think over again my small adventures.
My fears.
Those small ones that seemed so big.
For all the vital things I had to get and to reach.
And yet there is only one great thing.
The only thing.
To live to see the great day that dawns and the light that fills the world.
~Old Inuit Song

Short clip from Never Cry Wolf, dedicated to those quite special friends who opened a little corner in their hearts for me to enter, when I seeked warmth.
You know who you are!

Thank You,Obrigado!_MW

Running...

Running has been a topic that many filmmakers and novelists have approached over the years. But what is it that makes the simple act of running such an interesting topic to approach?
Are there not many other athletics skills or events more interesting that would give great stories? Maybe! There are quite a few Artworks out there that depict athleticism and sports of all sorts from golf to boxing, to Skydiving and rock climbing and so on that narrate the story of true or fictional carachters that were known for their athletic prowess, or simply due to the fact that some filmmaker decided there was a story to be told about some sportsman or athlete out there.
However, what is it that still makes the act of running such an interesting topic for novelists and filmmakers to develop and elaborate? Simplest act in the world for anyone lucky enough to have both legs and a healthy heart. We have been doing it since we started taking our first steps without the aid of parental hands. We all have that memorable run in our minds were it from escaping someone or something that imposed danger to us,or to that run we made towards someone or something we called our prize or our loved one.
Most of us were for the first time challenged or challenged our teen aggressive peer for a run to see whom was faster.
Some few enjoy the act of running so much they do it every day for a number of hours, some do it just for the fun of it,some hate it and are obligated to do it,but most of us when we get older old that memory of how fast we were when we knew our prime.
Most of whom are deprived from the act of running due to health problems or some sort of incarceration, value the act of running sometimes more than life itself since it became an impossible task to achieve and because of its sheer representation of health or absolute freedom.
There are certain tribes in South America that even turned the act of running into a religion.Long distance runners are true wizards in the act of running and can share stories about it that most couch potatoes (that´s me,lol) would not even begin to understand.
Needless to say, there was still a lot more to be said about running...

Respiro / I Breathe

Short scene from the movie Respiro (2002)/ Amazing music piece (Nestor's Saga) by John Surman

The Fisherman by Rosemarie E. Bishop

I saw an old fisherman out in a boat,
rocking alone on the rippling waters.
"Are you fishing for sport?" I called out to him,
trying to be friendly,
but he only waved.
Thinking that maybe he couldn't hear me to well,
I called out again in a louder voice.
"Are you fishing for food?" I asked him this time,
hoping I'd get a response.
Once again, he simply waved,
as his boat drifted a little more.
As he drew nearer, his face became clearer,
and soon I knew who he was.
"Are you fishing for me?" I asked Him this time,
knowing the answer before He replied.
The fisherman smiled as he held out his hand
and said to me, "Come aboard, Child."

The End of the "Pink Era"

I wasn´t sure if I should post this being so close to Christmas and all and bring to the table such a... (I cannot find the proper word) but the news about Blake Edwards death kind off caught me off guard,I mean I was a fan of the Man´s Artwork (If you believe cinema is Art, I do) and whenever I think about the Pink Panther movies I´ve watched trough my teens I always crack up laughing. I mean, Blake Edwards was the man with the plan, the Great puppeteer, the genius director behind the movie stage that made the magic happen and brought to us some of the most hilarious movies that one can ever see,I still remember laughing my AS* off until tears would run down my face and I would grab my rib cage from the hurt that I felt and the fear that something inside me would explode from laughing so hard. I mean, there are comedies, there are silly movies and then there´s genius and THAT was the sort of movies Blake Edwards would direct, movies you would laugh so hard you would fall off a chair (I DID).

I don´t mean to sound disrespectful "BUT" associated with such great comedies Blake Edwards name will also go down with another great name long departed and that was "Peter Sellers", because truth be told the Pink Panther series would have never been such a hit if it weren´t for the sheer genius of this great actor that impersonated the "Inspector Clouseau" Character so well, no one could replace him, there´s a time and an era for everything in life and I do not mean the sequels from The Pink Panther after Peter Sellers death were bad or not so funny,I´m just saying that at that specific time true magic happened between the alliance of these two (even, as the story goes if they weren´t in the best of terms with each other and lived a rather conflictuos and strange work relationship way far from the "healthy" work relationship "displayed" for public appearances, but it´s not my place to judge, I´m just a movie fan. I am also wondering if The Pink Panther character and cartoons (unbelievable great stuff also) will not be forsaken over the years since the "man with the plan" is now dead.

You shall be missed Mr.Edwards ...( The Pink panther theme tune would sound great here wouldn´t it ?)_BB

The Piano / O Piano

As winter approaches and along with it the rainy season It comes to mind a movie that I really like, and that movie is the Piano (1993) . The piano isn´t the sort of movie that you would watch comfortably on a Sunday afternoon eating popcorn and drinking cola, for I don´t believe this is the proper mindset that a person engages when watching a movie drama ( at least I cannot watch a movie drama with such lightness of heart, but maybe that´s just me). I mean, let's not be too fanatical to the point of bringing a box of Kleenex before you put the DVD on antecipating an abundant tear flow LOL, what I mean is simply that this is a movie (according to my point of view) filled with wonder, Intoxicating, magical, perfect, or to be perfectly clear it has all of those essential features that give the word "cinema" a true significance has major art work and not as mere entertainment for the masses.

For me, this was without a doubt one of the movies that most captivated my sensitivity to the drama movie genre I mean, the script is phenomenal and filled with genius, originality and innovation compiled in a story that fills and satisfies all the corners of the most eager minds, but also with an array of excellent actors whose performance is great, excellent photography, decor, wardrobe and countless more number of details until you reach the climax with an electrifying soundtrack performed by Michael Nyman that still remains vivid in the minds and hearts of many thousands of music lovers around the world.

I remember perfectly the first time I saw The Piano, and feeling that unusual sense of being carried from the movie theater chair straight inside the screen, and this long before any mention of 3D movies. Even today whenever I see the first minutes of this movie I can almost sense the smell from the beach, taste the sea salt, hear the creaking wood of the piano swollen from Winter´s humidity and become mesmerized with the piano music pieces. And that magnificent story, so human, so brutally real, unlike any other multimillion, money making, fairy tale love story covered with a dozen layers of sweet love and topped with hugs, kisses and making out scenes that would turn it into such a boring and empty love story that It would leave a bitter taste in the mouth of anyone who believes Himself as an intelligent viewer. I do not want to spoil the ending of the movie to those who never saw it but The Piano also has its dosage of passionate love scenes and it also has an happy ending, but there´s such beauty in such scenes, such sobriety that it will fall far from any sort of cheap love plot and that´s part of its magnificence since it is a love story but it is also a great drama_However _It isn´t such a drama that would fail into giving a happy ending to the leading characters, what is truly captivating are the turns that the story gives in such an intelligent fashion that makes one attentive and curious until the very end. And there is also the originality of the action that unfolds in New Zealand. Instead of showing some sort of vision from Paradise painted in a flowery and colorful brochure that pimps sex,sea and sand to wealthy tourists it brings down all myths and presents a movie covered with a bleak and greyish winter color in a barren land where humidity will cut you down to the bone and the air is filled with the smell of rotting wood and the filth most common to those that struggle, live, love, survive, have children and grow inside a mud field. The great brilliance of such scenario is that within it you will also witness acts of sheer beauty, sensuality and enchantment.

A movie worth watching once more at winter time, for sure._BB

Alfama´s Lovebirds

I won´t lie to you,but The Lovebirds (2007) isn´t exactly "the sharpest tool in the shed"_ cinematographically speaking that is. I won´t be so bold to tell you that this is a great movie,to be frank in my opinion this is just average cinema;However_for me a Portuguese citizen born and practically raised in Lisbon city The Lovebirds is much more than a mere curiosity, for there are certain nuances upon it that made me smile out of pure joy. It is a great link between Portugal and the U.S. but it´s much more than that,it is indeed a great link between two very different cities (Lisbon and New York) but each with a similar "soul" that makes these two seem almost like siblings that were separated from each other when they were born for some mysterious reason.

The Lovebirds is almost like a reunion of these two after many years where they share similar stories among each other in some Bar filled with cigarette smoke after hours on a rotten part of town (wherever that is), even though these "stories" took place in very different atmospheres, there is that sense of Deja Vu that only siblings seem to be aware. Maybe I´m "pushing the envelope" I´m no film critic, I´m just an ordinary guy that likes "the movies" but It was great to watch on the same screen and sharing the same background a couple of great actors that I really respect such as Michael Imperioli and John Ventimiglia ( you probably know these two from the Sopranos) with a few faces known to me from the Portuguese movie screens.

There was much more to say but i´m not that good with words (even in my native tongue) I´ll leave with with a short clip from The Lovebirds I found on YouTube and ask of you to watch it to the very end where you can see a very short dialogue between Michael Imperioli and Ana Padrão a Portuguese Actress, and maybe just maybe you will find out why I love this movie._BB

Michael Imperioli _Those buildings down there are so, old...look how they lean against each other crumbling ! It´s like they´re holding each other up for stability but if you´d just touch one, they´d all fall apart and break.

Ana Padrão_ You know?...earthquake?!

Michael Imperioli_Yeah,1755 right ?All of Lisbon got destroyed.

Ana Padrão_Not Alfama...not us.

Michael Imperioli_You survived !

Ana Padrão_Yes !

Lady Hawk

Here is a short clip I found on Youtube from one of the greatest love stories ever told. I wish I had the words to describe the fullness of all beauty present in this movie scene,so I can only take a few steps back and try to share with you the intensity and power from such story that speaks straight to my heart.
Ladies and Gentleman,I give you Lady Hawk, one of the greatest love stories ever told :

No matter where you go

I will find you

In the place with no frontiers

No matter where you go

I will find you

If it takes a thousand years.

Maladjusted / Desajustado

There are certain technical words in the vocabulary of every academic discipline which tend to become stereotypes and cliches. Psychologists have a word which is probably used more frequently than any other word in modern psychology. It is the word “maladjusted.” This word is the ringing cry of the new child psychology.

Now in a sense all of us must live the well adjusted life in order to avoid neurotic and schizophrenic personalities. But there are some things in our social system to which I am proud to be maladjusted and to which I suggest that you too ought to be maladjusted.

I never intend to adjust myself to the viciousness of mob-rule. I never intend to adjust myself to the evils of segregation and the crippling effects of discrimination. I never intend to adjust myself to the tragic inequalities of an economic system which take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few. I never intend to become adjusted to the madness of militarism and the self-defeating method of physical violence.
-Dr.Martin Luther King JR.

-PT.(Portuguese Translation):
É a palavra "desajustado".

A couple of movies with animals...

Just in case you are wondering about watching one or a couple of good movies over the weekend and you are having trouble finding a good movie title that interests you, or if the movies currently on cinema don´t seem appealing enough for you to spent money on a movie ticket, then I have a few proposals of my own that may (or may not) be of you interest.

But first let me ask you a question_Do you like movies with animals on it ?_If your answer is yes then you will have no problem with the titles that I´m about to give you,and if the answer is no that maybe because (I´m only guessing) you may find that movies with animals are a dumb waste of time,or they are only fit for little children or even only fit for animal lovers that saw Lassie over 500 times and still cry every time they see it. You probably like a movie with a good script that tells a great story and is good enough for you to watch it twice or maybe three times,_If this is the case never fear because these particular movies with animals that i am about to show you are also great stories with some of the best scripts that i´ve ever seen.

The first one and without following any particular order of preference is an old classic called Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) starring Burt Lancaster which plays the part of a famous inmate named Robert Stroud who was imprisoned as a young Man for committing a murder. After that he is sentenced to life in prison for killing a prison guard and sentenced to solitary confinement for the rest of is life.

That could be the end of the story all by itself, or you could watch a quick version from the life of a man trapped behind bars without even the smallest shred of humanity left to testify that he was once a man and not having those small luxuries that we take for granted every day and are a part of life. But that wouldn´t be much of a movie except if you like sick emotions. Sometimes those who are deprived from everything can see great wonder and beauty in the smallest of things, and that is what this movie is all about.

Just to give you a short taste of the story,_ one day Stroud who is passing away in the exercise yard like a caged animal on a stormy night is surprised by a tree twig that falls on the yard. On it a small infant sparrow is chirping away in distress and Stroud driven by a strange impulse keeps the little bird for himself, an isolated act which will originate in a great personal change not only for him but also for life in prison itself. The movie as an added flavour to it since it is based on a real story although over the years and even today there are those who claim that the movie is some sort of original scam to sanctify the hardcore incorrigible and brutal murderer Stroud really was but to those sort of critics I ask them to look at the movie from the mere cinematographic aspect of the story since so much is lost due to categorizing things as good or bad, Stroud was no angel that´s for sure, but lived a life interesting enough to make a spectacular movie from it with much less than those who claim to be pauper have.

This is a movie not only for animal or bird lovers but also for those who believe in redemption or simply like a good story.

Please, if you are one of those persons who like to have a great cinematic experience and believes it can only be provided by a twenty first century digital experience filled with hypnotic colors,3D glasses and an orgy of special effects think again. Yes, Birdman of Alcatraz is an old movie a real classic filmed in black and white but has some of the greatest images and photography that i´ve seen on screen accompanied by a soundtrack that is most fitting to the development of the story.

Indeed a true classic that required a fitting remake of it´s genre for a new century that is so much in need of redemption and beauty.

Also based on a true story is Never Cry Wolf (1983),now I feel a real need not to jump ahead and tell you what a great movie this is (which is true) without giving you a small personal view of he movie itself. When I first heard that Disney studios produced this movie I felt that unease feeling of suspicion towards it since I wasn´t in the mood to watch a cute, fluffy, parent authorized perspective of the wolf depicted for an eight year old point of view. I certainly was and am sick of watching movies based on wolves filled with blood shed and the brutal attack of wild beasts on scout teenagers who wandered too far into the wild, or another sad and stupid version of werewolves with a never ending thirst for blood and human guts. I wanted to see a truthful story that showed this magnificent animal for what it is and not a twisted version from the nightmarish or embellishing human mind think of what a wolf is supposed to be, since man is never at ease with the magnificent and truthful beauty of nature. So it was a bit reluctant that I saw Never Cry Wolf for the first time and...to my surprise, I was amazed. I mean there is so much beauty in this movie that it would take much time for me to depict all of it and give you a truthful personal insight of what the movie is all about. On it you will find great beauty of many genres and also a great music score (one of the best) by Mark Isham which composed a soundtrack so powerful and filled with beauty that it falls under the category of music one can hear on a daily basis. But about the movie itself, the story is a narrative of a biologist named Tyler played by Charles Martin Smith who travels to the Arctic to undergo a study of why the population of caribou is decreasing in numbers and if the Arctic Wolves have anything to do about the decreasing count of caribous herds. Alone in a strange and isolated land inhospitable and far from every comfort of the modern world he fears what may be lurking in the dark and is awaken from sleep from his own demons who take the shape of the wolf with whom he is not yet familiarized with. Reality itself will bring many pleasant surprises to the story as well as some sad ones when Lavery finally comes face to face with this strange and mysthical creature who in the end resembles Man in so many ways.

There are quite a few movies that I could recommend to you that depict the interaction between Man and animals but for now I believe that these two titles will be more than enough for the weekend.

I hope you enjoy.

Finding The Balance

You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.
_Morpheus

_ if the name Matrix popped in your head as you were reading this sentence than you should pat yourself in the back because you are right.
Few people fail  to recognize this incredible little short dialog , which i believe to be wonderful and almost mysterious because out of millions of other movies and millions of great movie scripts I often wonder why these few words should stand out in most minds with such vivid intensity.
Of course, you have all the visual experience behind the words that are spoken in the movie and The Matrix is surely a movie with a very rich, original and vivid cinematographic graphics and plot.
Still, i believe that those words had some sort of magic attached to them, you probably felt some sort of familiarity and empathy in the little speech that Morpheus was giving to Neo.
I think that to this day Lawrence Fishburne will always feel proud looking back at this film and remembering that dialog.
However it´s not about The Matrix that i wanted to focus on but on another movie that Mr. Burne´s also gave a not so short but in my humble opinion a magnificent speech and magnificent display of great acting.
It´s a striking theatrical performance not in a duo like in the matrix dialog between Lawrence Fishburne and Keanu Reeves but in a trio where Lawrence Fishburne plays the part of a Hotel Chef a.k.a . Cook and is having a talk with a few other Hotel employees ( Jacob Vargas as Miguel and  Freddy Rodriguez as José Rojas ) that also helped in the magic of this great dialog.
So if i was impressed with the all popping red and blue pills (this always makes me think about viagra LOL) and waking up to a new reality dialog, let me tell you that the following performance blew my mind away.
So, if you´ve never seen this movie I highly recommend that you do.
Meanwhile I pray that you, me, everyone, may find that necessary balance that will bring us closer to each other as brothers and not as stereotypes, because in the end “WE ARE ALL EQUAL”.
If you watch the clip you´ll understand what I mean about balance.
Here´s a short clip from Bobby:

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL / A VIDA É BELA / LA VITA È BELLA

Let me ask you a question, do you have a favorite movie, that movie that makes you "vibrate" that makes you feel it is a story worth sharing with everyone else in the world?
Obviously I am not referring to the bloodiest horror movie that made you jump from your chair out of fear or the comedy with so many pillars of stupidity attatched to it that makes it impossible not to laugh.
No, I mean that movie that made you think deeply about something that is lacking in the world (whatever that may be).
Let me rephrase the question as follows; imagine for a moment that you were a doctor and the patient you had before you had all the symptoms of great misfortune and despair, now imagine that instead of recommending an antidepressant drug you told  him (her) to watch a movie, what would that movie be?
Or imagine that in the act of voting you were also allowed to place on the ballot the name of a movie that everyone should see in order to bring some inspiration to our politicians  so that there would be positive changes on the lives of the voters.
No matter what kind of film, neither it´s nationality or whether it was seen too much or too little or if it had won or not an award,  I would just like to hear your comment about "that" movie that you would recommend as something that is worth watching because of it´s value.
Here is my suggestion: LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL.
I could spend hours talking about this movie, let me just anticipate that if you  never saw this movie and if you like Cinema as much as me please don´t miss this one.
I´m pretty sure you will love it.
And if you´ve watched it, well, watch it again !.
I will save you the time telling you about the movie plot, if you want to read something about it can do so over HERE.
I still remember the first time I saw LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL.
I still remember that wonderful feeling of leaving the cinema with other people and how amazed I was to see that everyone had a smile on their lips.
To finish let me just  mention a true little story that I read a long time ago about LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL and that the main Actor and movie Director Roberto Benigni told about it.
Roberto Begnini did a screening of the film for his Father to watch, in the end he and asked him what he thought of it.

The Father replied in the following way :
At last, you did something worth watching !
:) .......................
Bellow is a short clip from one of my favourite scenes.

Aqui vai a minha sugestão: A VIDA É BELA.
O Pai respondeu-lhe do seguite modo :
Até que enfim, fazes alguma coisa de jeito !
:) .......................
