Maladjusted / Desajustado

 There are certain technical words in the vocabulary of every academic discipline which tend to become stereotypes and cliches. Psychologists have a word which is probably used more frequently than any other word in modern psychology. It is the word “maladjusted.” This word is the ringing cry of the new child psychology.


Now in a sense all of us must live the well adjusted life in order to avoid neurotic and schizophrenic personalities. But there are some things in our social system to which I am proud to be maladjusted and to which I suggest that you too ought to be maladjusted.


I never intend to adjust myself to the viciousness of mob-rule. I never intend to adjust myself to the evils of segregation and the crippling effects of discrimination. I never intend to adjust myself to the tragic inequalities of an economic system which take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few. I never intend to become adjusted to the madness of militarism and the self-defeating method of physical violence.

Há certas palavras técnicas no vocabulário de cada disciplina académica que tendem a tornar-se estereótipos e clichês. Os psicólogos têm uma palavra que é, provavelmente, usada mais frequentemente do que qualquer outra palavra na psicologia moderna. É a palavra "desajustado". Esta palavra é o grito de alarme desta nova criança que é a Psicologia.

Agora, em certo sentido, todos nós devemos viver a vida bem ajustados para evitar personalidades neuróticas e esquizofrénicas. Mas há algumas coisas no nosso sistema social, ao qual me orgulho de ser desajustado e para as quais também sugiro que vocês também se tornem desajustados.

Eu não faço intenção de ajustar-me à crueldade da multidão enraivecida. Eu nunca terei a intenção de ajustar-me aos males da segregação e aos efeitos incapacitantes da discriminação. Eu não faço intenção de adaptar-me às desigualdades trágicas de um sistema económico que tira as poucas necessidades de muitos para dar luxo a uns poucos. Eu não faço intenção de tornar-me ajustado à loucura do militarismo e ao método de auto-derrota da violência física.
